Y S Rajasekhar Reddy, who steered the party to a landslide victory ending a ten-year political drought for Congress in Andhra Pradesh, was unanimously elected leader of the Congress Legislature Party at a meeting of the new MLAs.

His name was proposed by PCC President D Srinivas, who was also said to have been one of the contenders, and seconded by senior leader K Ranga Rao.
