In order to strengthen law and order and bring more transparency in its management, the Central Jail administration had installed eight complaint boxes including two in front of the jail superintendent’s office in January.

"We have addressed the maximum number of complaints we have received and only a few remains to be resolved," said jail superintendent Sanjay Pandey.

The initiative was introduced after a shootout at the state’s most populated jail to build confidence among the prisoners and track suspicious activities of habitual offenders.

Pandey said, "Many a time lack of an intelligence network inside the jail leads to serious crimes such as shootouts. But now inmates can report suspicious activities of fellow inmates through these grievance boxes."

Pandey said that the complaint boxes have been made in such a manner that they cannot be broken or fiddled with.

"Keys of the all complaint boxes were kept with the superintendent. Every week, we prioritize complaints on the basis of their seriousness. If the matter is serious, we immediately take action," Pandey added.

Pandey, however, added that inmates usually refrain from lodging complaints against jail stuffers fearing physical torture if they highlight their highhandedness.

But after the installment of these grievance boxes the whole process has become simpler.

Pandey said on an average, they receive about 30 to 35 complaints each week.
