Indore creates two green corridors for liver, kidney transplantation

Indore registered another milestone in organ donation with the creation of two green corridors to simultaneously transfer the liver and kidney of a brain-dead patient

Indore registered another milestone in organ donation with the creation of two green corridors to simultaneously transfer the liver and kidney of a brain-dead patient to Gurgaon and Bombay hospitals on Sunday.

Divisional commissioner Sanjay Dubey told the media from his residence that it was for the first time in the country that two green corridors were created to transport the organ speedily and safely.

“Two green corridors were created one was between Choithram Hospital and the airport while the other was between Choithram hospital and Bombay hospital. A total of eight and twelve minutes were taken respectively by the two ambulances to reach their destination,” he said.

A 59-year-old patient Ramesh Asarani had been undergoing treatment at the Anand Hospital in the city. After he was declared brain-dead, he was shifted to Choithram hospital so his organs could be retrieved safely.

“The doctors took a lot of precautions but a complication arose while transferring the patient from Anand hospital to Choithram hospital. It did jeopardise the mission as the patient’s blood pressure started to fall, but Dr Pradeep Salgia managed to revive him,” said Dubey.

Simultaneously, a kidney was transported through the green corridor to Bombay hospital where a patient underwent a successful transplant. The eyes and skin were kept in a bank to be used later.

On October 7, a similar green corridor had been created wherein a patient’s liver was flown to Medanta Hospital, Gurgaon, after covering a total of 8 kms, making Indore the first city in central India to be able to execute such a case.
