Former Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chairman Dr K Radhakrishnan on Friday said that India drew lessons from other failures to successfully launch Mangalyaan on its first attempt to achieve a milestone of orbiting Mars.
Delivering the keynote address at the inaugural session of two-day 24th International Management Conclave organised by Indore Management Association (IMA) on Friday, Radhakrishnan said Mangalyaan’s launch preceded a week-long brain-storming sessions at the ISRO, where more than 200 scientists deliberated on questions about possibilities of failures the mission may encounter.
“Answer was found to every question. We drew lessons from 51 earlier failed missions to mars,” said Radhakrishnan, who was conferred with IMA’s lifetime innovation award at the conclave.
“It is not individual excellence but how an organisation functions as a team that makes a difference.”
On September 24, 2014, India became the first nation to reach Mars orbit in its first attempt and also the first Asian nation to do so. Addressing a large gathering of students, he said it is the wisdom of seniors and the energy of youth can take the nation ahead in every field.
“We have to slog and be willing to learn. Actual learning starts after one passes out of college.” Quoting his mentor SC Gupta, Radhakrishnan said: “The business management institute taught you how to learn. Even if you use 8% of what you learned, it will be a great achievement. Rest you have to be on your own.”

{{/usCountry}}Recalling how science benefits people, he said it is because of satellites that Indian fishermen reach the exact spot where fish are in abundance, which saves fuel worth Rs 5 lakh used to operate the boats.
Satellites help in predicting cyclones and save thousands of lives, he added.
Industrialist Rahul Bajaj, who was also conferred with the IMA’s lifetime achievement award, addressing the conclave, said that the country needs thousands of management professionals, to make Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dream of making India into a global business powerhouse.
