The city’s day of rest proved more pleasant than Kolkatans had imagined, with temperatures dropping dramatically on Sunday. The day was even graced by a short spell of rain that helped cool the sudden heat wave through the city and the districts, which breathed easy on the weekend, courtesy the weather system.
A trough that developed in the northeastern states, including Assam and Meghalaya, since Saturday matured from the Sunday morning bringing down the temperature by a few degrees. On Sunday the maximum temperature was 340(-1) while the minimum was 24.60(-2) Celsius.
“There were chances of light rainfall in Kolkata and as we expected traces rainfall have been reported since Sunday afternoon,” said India Meteorological department, Alipore, director Gokul Chandra Debnath.
The humidity, too, had soared to a maximum of 90% on Sunday while the minimum humidity remained at 32%. From Sunday morning the city sky was covered with cloud that blocked the suns rays.
Met experts said similar weather would persist in the city, as the trough would hover above the city for the next 24 hours. The last time it rained in Kolkata was on February 17. It rained 9.9mm.
