A female student of a college in West Bengal’s Hooghly district has accused the general secretary of Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP)-run students’ union of assaulting her after she spurned his advances.
The incident took place on January 4 in the union room of Bidhan Chandra College in Rishra town but the student lodged a complaint against Shahid Hasan Khan with Chandannagar Police on January 17. The police were yet to take any action against Shahid until the time of writing this report.
A closed-circuit television camera footage shows the third-year student being slapped, grabbed by her neck and pushed towards the door of a room.
She also alleged that Khan kicked her after dragging her to a corner outside the coverage of the CCTV camera.
“He gave me indecent proposals. When I did not respond he harassed me,” alleged the victim.
“I am feeling insecure. I can’t go to college. I am not secure either at in the college nor outside. How long will I stay at home? I want to place this question to chief minister Mamata Banerjee,” the woman student said.
She alleged that Shahid had been threatening her with dire consequences and saying that his father wielded enough power to silence her family. Khan is the son of Zahid Hassan Khan, vice-chairperson of Rishra municipality.
“I want to remain a member of TMCP, but if this is the nature of the general secretary, it is a matter of panic. He even threatened me to let loose his boys on me,” she added.
She also claimed that two other students, Suraj Dubey and Sadab Alam, were present when she was assaulted.
Shahid denied that he assaulted the woman.
“The allegation is false. Why should I assault her?” he said.
“We cannot take action against the accused till we get the report of the inquiry we have started,” Ramesh Kar, the principal of the college, said.
Zahid Hassan Khan refused to comment on “whatever happened on the college campus”.
“Let the administration and party investigate and act accordingly,” he said.
The student wing of ruling Trinamool Congress has often been criticised for campus violence in the state, but this is the first time that a union leader has assaulted a woman student.
TMCP said it will take action against Shahid.
“We’ll not tolerate such behaviour. We are taking steps to cancel Khan’s primary membership,” TMCP’s state president Jaya Dutta said.
Dutta added that Shahid has also been asked to resign from the post of general secretary of the students’ union.
“This is the culture of Trinamool Congress. We are not surprised,” said Bhaskar Bhattacharya, district BJP president.
