A youth in his early -twenties allegedly molested a woman after taking a bet with his friends at Baruipur, on the southern outskirts of the city, on Tuesday afternoon. What’s more shocking is that the incident took place in broad daylight.

An irate mob later staged a protest outside the Baruipur police station demanding immediate arrest of the accused persons.

They alleged that such cases of eve-teasing and molestation were common in the area and repeated complaints to the local police had not yielded any results.

“We’ve received a complaint and investigations are on. The victim complained that she was molested by the youth while she was returning home from work. The youths are all locals and a search is on to arrest them,” said P Tripathi, superintendent of police, South 24-Parganas.

Sources said that a gang of 10 youths was chatting near a culvert in the Gajipara area at about 5pm.

Four women who work as ayahs were returning home from duty.

“Two youths, Babui Sheikh and Battu Gaji, placed a bet among themselves on who could molest a woman in that group. Babui took the lead and confronted the women. He then dragged one of them and molested her,” said a local.

When the other women protested, they, too, were manhandled. Later, when the women raised an alarm, the youths promptly fled the spot.

The victim was so shocked that she ran home.

Later, she returned with members of her family to lodge a complaint with the police.

Locals alleged that school and college students were often eve-teased in the area. The same group had been harassing girls for the past few days.

“Anger was brewing among the locals, since such crimes are common in the area. Locals — and even politicians — cutting across party lines have all lodged complaints earlier, but the police failed to arrest anyone.

They staged a protest today outside the police station,” said S Purkayastha, deputy pradhan of the village.
