Is your body running low on water? Here are warning signs that could mean you need to improve your hydration.

Water is one of the most important nutrients your body needs in order to function properly. It helps digestion, controls body temperature, cushions joints, carries nutrients and helps eliminate waste. Dehydration can have a negative impact on your physical and emotional health. For overall health, it is important to stay hydrated throughout the day as the body is constantly losing water through breathing, sweating and urinating.

Eshanka Wahi, a Dubai and Delhi-based culinary nutrition and holistic wellness coach and founder of Eat Clean With Eshanka, shared signs that you might not be drinking enough water.

You're always thirsty

Eshanka highlighted that you may be somewhat dehydrated if you frequently grab for a glass of water because your mouth feels dry or if you're thirsty all the time. Make it a habit to drink water frequently throughout the day instead of waiting until you're thirsty.

Urine with a dark yellow colour

“Your skin may feel tight, look dry, or be dull if you don't drink enough water,” said Eshanka. Another common symptom of dehydration is chapped lips. While lip balms and moisturisers can help on the outside, adequate hydration helps to promote healthier skin from the inside out.

A lot of headaches

Dehydration can also cause headaches as well as migraines for some people. Blood volume may somewhat drop when the body is dehydrated, which would limit the amount of oxygen and nutrients that reach the brain. If you have headaches after exercising, being outdoors, or not drinking enough water, this could be a concern.

Constipation

A healthy digestive system requires water. The colon collects more water from waste when your body is dehydrated, which makes passing stools more challenging. Regular bowel motions and digestive comfort can be supported by consuming enough fibre and drinking plenty of water.
