Polling in 51 parliamentary constituencies is underway in the fifth, and the smallest phase of the 2019 general elections. Barring seven parliamentary constituencies in West Bengal and Anantnag and Ladakh in Jammu and Kashmir, this phase of election is entirely in Hindi speaking states.
A 2019 phase-wise classification of PCs by 2014 results shows that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its other National Democratic Alliance (NDA) partners had the highest seat share in the PCs which are going to polls today.
The results of the elections, which are being conducted over seven phases, will be announced on May 23.

53.19% voter turnout till 5 pm in Phase 5 of Lok Sabha elections
Over 53 per cent voter turnout was recorded Monday till 5 pm in 14 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh where Union ministers Rajnath Singh and Smriti Irani, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Congress president Rahul Gandhi are in the fray, according to PTI.
51% voter turnout till 3 pm
At 3 pm, the voter turnout in the fifth phase of Lok Sabha elections 2019 stood at 50.62%.
44.08% polling was recorded in Bihar, 15.34% in Jammu and Kashmir, 53.77% in Madhya Pradesh, 50.40% in Rajasthan, 44.79% in Uttar Pradesh, 62.84% in West Bengal and 58.63% in Jharkhand, as per data on Election Commission’s Voter Turnout app.
TMC candidates alleges assault by central force personnel in Bengal
TMC candidate in Howrah Lok Sabha constituency Prasun Banerjee, who is also a former India football team captain, alleged that he, along with his party supporters, were assaulted by central force personnel in Balitikuri under Howrah Lok Sabha constituency.
“Women workers were also hit with sticks. I was hit in the shoulder. I am not used to assaults,” said the 64-year-old, who was an Arjuna awardee in 1979.
Banerjee said a central force personnel recognised him “as a great player” but also twisted his arm and assaulted him.
The incident happened before 2 pm.
“One of the personnel was intoxicated. We are filing a complaint,” said TMC leader of Howrah district and minister Arup Roy.

Locals allege crude bombs hurled in Bengal, TMC supporter injured
Asit Das, purportedly a TMC supporter, was injured in the head after crude bombs were hurled. According to locals, two bombs were hurled. TMC supporters alleged the bombs were thrown after BJP candidate Shantanu Thakur left the area.
The incident happened at Himli area under Bongaon constituency.
41% voter turnout till 1 pm
At 1 pm, the voter turnout in the fifth phase of Lok Sabha elections 2019 stood at 40.73%.
32.27% polling was recorded in Bihar, 11.35% in Jammu and Kashmir, 43.93% in Madhya Pradesh, 42.63% in Rajasthan, 35.15% in Uttar Pradesh, 50.78% in West Bengal and 45.98% in Jharkhand, as per data on Election Commission’s Voter Turnout app.

Re-polling underway in five polling booths in Andhra
Re-polling is on at a brisk pace in five polling booths in three districts of Andhra Pradesh Monday.
About 16 per cent of polling was reported overall in the first two hours after the process began, Election Commission officials here said.
The re-poll has been ordered in view of technical glitches in electronic voting machines in these polling booths.

27% voter turnout till 11 am
At 11 am, the voter turnout in the fifth phase of Lok Sabha elections 2019 stood at 27.11%.
20.74% polling was recorded in Bihar,6.09% in Jammu and Kashmir, 29.71% in Madhya Pradesh, 29.39% in Rajasthan, 22.96% in Uttar Pradesh, 33.57% in West Bengal and 29.49% in Jharkhand, as per data on Election Commission’s Voter Turnout app.

Grenade attack on polling booth in Pulwama
Militants Monday lobbed a grenade towards a polling station in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir where polling is underway for the Anantnag Lok Sabha constituency, police said.
A grenade was lobbed towards Rohmoo polling station in Pulwama but there were no reports of any casualties in the the blast, a police official said.
He said security forces have cordoned off the area.
This was the first militant attack on a polling station in this Lok Sabha election in Jammu and Kashmir.
