Overcrowding and mismanagement led to chaos on the second day of the special ID card distribution drive organised by Lucknow University for its 2,950 laptop beneficiaries.
At least two girls fainted while hundreds of others had to sweat it out the entire day on the campus to collect their passes on Wednesday.
The university officials looked confused on how to distribute the special passes to the large number of beneficiaries who will receive laptops on Saturday.
The students had the option of collecting their passes from the office of the Dean Students’ Welfare (DSW) office on any day between July 23 and 25.
But there was unexpected rush on Wednesday as hundreds of candidates who were not eligible for the free laptops turned up at the university.
LU had set up 10 counters for the distribution of special passes, which continued till 7 pm.
What triggered the problem?
Initially, LU had said that a token would be issued to the beneficiaries after they deposit their documents and the passes will be issued the next day.
Later, the university changed the plan and said that the special passes will be issued on the spot.
Hence, those students who went home carrying tokens a day before were confused. The hot and humid weather coupled with inadequate arrangement of water on the campus compounded the problem.
Proctor Pawan Agarwal said, “The problem occurred as all the 2,950 students wanted their passes to be given on Wednesday itself. We had kept three days for this purpose.”
Amid the confusion and rush, students were seen jostling with each other to collect the special passes.
Two girls fainted near the counter.
But LU proctor said that he had no information of girls fainting on the campus.
CM Akhilesh Yadav will distribute free laptops to beneficiaries at LU in the second phase of distribution on July 27.
Laptops will also be distributed at various other colleges the same day.
Principals of respective educational institutions would give away the gadgets during functions.
Earlier, the programme was scheduled on July 10, which was postponed. Sources said the chief minister would grace the functions at some institutions, but there was no official confirmation about this.
Akhilesh Yadav launched the Samajwadi Party government’s free laptop scheme on March 11 when he personally distributed nearly 10,000 gadgets among the beneficiaries in Lucknow. Since then, nearly 80,000 laptops have been distributed in functions across the state - all attended by the CM.
The second phase includes distribution of 826 laptops at Mumtaz PG College, 826 at DAV College and another 1,067 laptops at Kalicharan PG College.
While 3,262 laptops would be distributed at JNPG College, 1,597 will be given away at BSNV College.
