The administration officials, teachers and students of Dr Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University allege that chief minister Akhilesh Yadav is not taking enough interest in his father’s dream project.This is the reason why the university goes without a vice-chancellor after Balraj Chauhan’s departure following completion of tenure in early January.
In fact, what surprises all is that the selection committee formed at the behest of the chief justice of India has already recommended the name of the new V-C. But, the state government is not pursuing it keenly for unknown reasons, which is indirectly casting its shadow on the varsity’s day-to-day functioning.
“During their poll campaign, the Samajwadi Party had projected RML University as one of its key achievements in the higher education sector. But, now the party seems to have lost interest in the university all of sudden. This is going to affect the 900 students studying in this university and would cause damage to university’s image in a big way,” says an official on condition of anonymity.
This university does not have a provision for pro-vice chancellor who otherwise could have handled academic issues in the absence of a regular V-C. For want of a vice chancellor, a number of academic matters cannot be pursued. For instance, the university is known for organising a number of events, like moot court competition, etc which allows students to compete with their counterparts in other universities.
“All these activities have come to a halt after the departure of Balraj Chauhan last month. There is no one to take a call on important issues. There is none who could guide us,” says a final year BA-LLB student. The university huge infrastructure and assets are remaining largely under utilised for want of a vicechancellor.
