The incident took place in Ashiana near the CRPF camp office when the driver of the vehicle, who was in an inebriated state, hit the boy’s bicycle from behind. The deceased, Vinit, was a Class 12 student.

The driver, Shailendra Verma, tried to flee but was caught by the locals who set the car on fire and also blocked traffic on the road. Verma was arrested by the police.

According to eyewitnesses, the car (UP 32 CN 8300) with a red beacon was coming from the Bijli Pasi Quila side when it hit Vinit’s cycle, made him fall on the ground and then ran over him. He died on the spot before any ambulance or cops could reach and take him to the hospital.

“The car was engaged in the convoy of the Samaj Kalyan Nirman Nigam and the driver was returning after duty,” said Sudhir Kumar, station house officer, Ashiana.

The locals staged a protest when cops from Ashiana police station reached the site of the accident. Vinit was the son of Vinod Singh, an employee in a private firm. The car is owned by one Dipak Tiwari.
