Admission charges at the trauma centre in King George’s Medical University would be waived off to ensure all patients got immediate treatment without spending time in depositing the fee (Rs 350), said hospital authorities.
The decision has been taken after complaints that doctors refuse to see patients without admission fee. The facility of treatment without fee was applicable to BPL patients and destitutes so far, but it will now be available to all.
KGMU’s co-faculty in charge of the media cell Dr Sudhir Singh said that patients taking admission via OPD would continue to pay admission fee.
The trauma centre gets over 300 patients every day (24 hours) and about half are admitted, requiring admission fee. A crisis ensues in case the number of patients is high at one particular time.
Under the new system, the fee will be taken when a patient is shifted to the wards/departments. By then the patient will be stable and the family will have adequate time to deposit the fee.
The next thing on cards is free treatment for the first 24 hours. However, this will start once the state government provides budget for it. The first 24 hours free treatment requires funds for medicines and diagnostic facilities.
