Under the Solid Waste Management Act 2016, local bodies are authorized to make rules to check solid waste generated due to such events. That is the reason the LMC wants to push the bill to manage solid waste of the city properly.

Additional municipal commissioner Amit Kumar said, “Waste in bulk is generated in such events where people assemble in large numbers. This waste, if not properly disposed, is spread on the road. It also causes environmental pollution, so the LMC needs to dispose of it properly. If the corporation is informed before the event, it can arrange proper disposal of the waste generated. Also, the event organisers would be directed to segregate the organic and inorganic waste.”

Organisers, caterers and tent house owners can face a fine up to Rs 1 lakh in case they break the rule.

However, the bill is still being drafted and will be discussed in the executive committee and LMC house before it is implemented in the state capital.

Corporator of Sadar Patel Nagar ward Girish Mishra said, “ Such rules will become a tool in the hands of LMC officials to harass the common man even during personal gatherings like marriages, birthdays or religious events. We will not agree to any fine or punishment in case the organisers fail to inform the civic body.”
