For better part of his career he was labeled a comedian but actor Sanjai Mishra feels that with serious character-driven roles in films like Masaan, Dum Laga Ke Haisa and Kadvi Hawa life has taken a pleasant turn and he is enjoying the phase heart and soul.
Mishra started his acting journey with hit TV serial Chanakya in 1991 and continued with small comedy roles in both big and small screen but these award-winning films have given wings to his career.
“Main mehsoos karta hoon ki in roles se darshakon ki dil main meri izzat bhadi hai (with these roles people have started recognising me as an actor). It has brought a good change. I got to act in Kadvi Hawa (which highlighted the issue climate change) and upcoming film Turtle (on water crisis in Rajasthan). So, kafi kuch behetreen ho raha hai,” says the actor on his visit to Lucknow.
The serious character roles that he got to play in some of his recent films has given his acting career a new dimension.
“I never got such opportunities before. Now, I am getting all types of roles and enjoying the phase,” he says.
He credits his turn of fate to 2014 film Ankhon Dheki for which he won Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor.
“Slowly, things changed and I started getting good character driven roles. Success of Masaan and Dum Laga Ke Haisa made huge difference. I got important films like Kadvi Hawa and Turtle due to these movies,” he says.
The Office-Office actor is enjoying the character roles but is not leaving his first love, comedy.
“I have got lots of love for my comedy roles (Dhamaal series and Golmaal series) so I will never leave that. After all I work for audience than anyone else,” he says and adds, “Personally, I am enjoying both types of roles that have their own charm. On one side is scripted character while on the other is life-driven role which has its own beauty. One has a big canvas for audience while other has the canvas of character.”
Mishra is upbeat about his upcoming films Turtle, Kamyaab, Total Dhamaal and Bhaiyaji Super Hit.
This is one of the busiest ever stint for the actor.
“Earlier too I was busy but then I was doing just anything for rozi-roti (survival). Now, I am able to do the kind of roles I always wanted to do and they are coming my way.”
The actor has shot in Lucknow before and a few months back he was in the city shooting for Tigmanshu Dhulia’s Milan Talkies. “This is a place where I have spent vacations as a kid in Nirala Nagar. We used to do lots of masti, khana-peena and sightseeing with relatives and friends. Then you come at the same place on a professional visit gives you a great feeling. It’s a very proud moment. Now, I have professional relation with the city too,” he adds.
