It’s been nearly three years since the release of her last film, the direct-to-DVD dud, Bordertown. Latina diva Jennifer Lopez took a break from acting, gave birth to twins, only to return to the big screen in this equally dud romantic farce. She shouldn’t have bothered.
Targeting the lowest common denominator audience, debutant director Poul never gets to the heart of the protagonist to involve us in her predicament.
Despairing of ever finding her Mr. Right, a 30-something pet shop proprietor (Lopez) opts for artificial insemination. Predictably, upon leaving the gynaecologist’s clinic, the mom-to-be bumps into the man (O’ Loughlin) of her dreams.
Will she summon up the courage to tell him that she’s carrying twins (natch!) from an anonymous sperm donor? Will the handsome young man agree to stay with her and raise the children together? You don’t have to be a soothsayer to know the answer to both the questions is yes and yes.
Replete with gross-out gags, the chick flick moves from pregnancy shenanigans to sessions with a support group for single mothers without ever being funny or credible.
There’s a workable chemistry between J-Lo and her Australian hunk co-star Alex O’Loughlin. Just in case you’re planning to go see the film, the best plan would be to have a Back-Up Plan.
