3 who killed 70-year-old in Borivli last week arrested

The Borivli police on Thursday arrested three men for murdering a 70-year-old man in Borivli last week. According to the police, the accused were identified as Mahesh Gawda, 28; Anilkumar Gawda, 27; and Kirankumar Gawda, 27. Mahesh was a former employee of the victim, Vaman Malhar Joshi.

On April 17, around 5.30pm, Joshi,who ran a small hotel in the vicinity, was found dead at his home in Borivli. Mahesh, along with Anilkumar and Kirankumar, planned to rob Joshi, as he wanted money to open a new hotel. Mahesh had worked for Joshi for seven years. He knew that Joshi used to keep cash at home. However, he was not aware that for the past few months Joshi had been depositing the money in the bank.

On April 17, the trio visited Joshi when he was alone at home and murdered him. They searched the house for money, but found only ₹10,000 and fled. During their investigation, the police learnt Mahesh was trying to evade questioning. “A team, comprising inspector Ravi Adane, assistant inspector GS Nair and sub inspectors Nilesh More and Jeevan Nirgude, traced the accused to Mandya in Karnataka. However, they had fled to Bengaluru and then to Tamil Nadu from where they were arrested,” said Sangramsingh Nishandar, deputy commissioner of police (Zone XI).
