33-year-old held in Mumbai for trying to kill brother in drunken brawl

A 33-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly trying to kill his younger brother at their Dharavi residence in a drunken brawl. The accused allegedly attacked his brother twice with a sharp weapon in a matter of seven hours.

Salim Shaikh, the accused and his brother Ashraf, 30, had been getting into fights over money over the past three days, police said. However, the fight turned ugly around 4pm Wednesday as Salim picked up a knife and slashed Ashraf across his chest, police said. Ashraf was provided treatment at a civic hospital, after which he registered a case against Salim with the Shahu Nagar police.

After Ashraf returned home, Salim cornered him around 11pm. Police said Salim was angry that Ashraf had registered a police complaint against him.

Police told the Bandra metropolitan magistrate that Salim charged at Ashraf with a sharp weapon and repeatedly attacked his brother in the abdomen. The victim sustained a 30cm-wide injury in his abdomen, police submitted in the court citing Ashraf’s medical reports. He is currently admitted in hospital.

While asking for police custody to investigate the case, prosecutor Priti Jagtap argued, “The accused attempted to kill his brother. This has left the injured unconscious and their mother has registered a case against the accused son.”

Dilip Thorat, senior inspector at Shahu Nagar police, said, “The brothers have been getting into drunken brawls over money. Both are married and stay in the same house. We are probing what exactly escalated the matter.”

The Bandra metropolitan court has remanded the accused in police custody till June 25.
