The Maharashtra Congress has announced that it will join the multi-party Samvidhan Bachao (Save Constitution) march, to be held on Republic Day in Mumbai.

Stepping up its attack against the Bharatiya Janata Party-led state and central governments, the party said it would also hold rallies and marches in all 36 districts across the state on January 26. The announcement was made on Tuesday after a meeting of senior party leaders.

“The state and central governments have done nothing except brag and talk big about developments over the past three years. The central government’s policies have been against the Constitution — it has attempted to change the fundamentals of the Indian Constitution. To oppose this attempt and strengthen the voice of dissent by all groups in Opposition, we have decided to join the march,” state Congress chief Ashok Chavan said.

The march, called by the Swabhimani Shetkari Paksha MP Raju Shetti and to be held in Mumbai from Gateway of India to Azad Maidan, will see the participation of various Opposition parties. Senior CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury, Congress MLA Alpesh Thakor, Dalit activist Jignesh Mevani and Patidar activist Hardik Patel, are likely to join the march.

Chavan said he would meet Shetti on Wednesday to discuss details.
