The intelligence unit of the Mumbai crime branch on Tuesday arrested an associate of Ravi Mallesh Bora alias DK Rao in a Rs50-lakh extortion case.
Anna Durai, an active member of the gang, is the third arrest in the case. The police have invoked stringent Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act (MCOCA). Durai was produced in a MCOCA court on Wednesday which remanded him in police custody till Saturday. According to the police, the complainant in the case, who is a real estate consultant, said he met a Kandivli-based developer and his partner in January 2014 to discuss the redevelopment of an SRA project in Antop Hill.
The consultant told the developer that Rao was interested in the project, to which the developer said he was on good terms with the gangster. Gangster Chhota Rajan asked the developer to pay Rs10 crore to his gang and Rs40 crore to the chief promoter of the project, Durai, said the complainant.
The consultant was, meanwhile, promised Rs2 crore and two flats as his fees, which was not paid. Rao allegedly asked him to stay away from the project and demanded Rs50 lakh. Following the complaint, Rao was arrested on October 11, 2017, followed by a real estate agent.
