Residents of the eastern suburbs will not have to wait for hours on end to get their learner’s driving licences after successfully clearing the test at Wadala RTO. The office has started issuing laminated learner’s licences to
successful applicants within 10 minutes.

This service is already available at Andheri and Borivli RTOs, which have jurisdiction over the western suburbs.

A senior official at Wadala RTO said this was made possible by making slight changes in the procedure of issuing learner’s driving licences at their service provider’s end, besides adding few printers and laminating machines.

“Once applicants successfully pass the learning licence test, in which they have to answer 15 objective questions, we ask them to wait outside for 10-15 minutes. We print their licences, laminate them and issue them immediately,” said a senior RTO official.

Earlier, citizens were forced to spend at least 2-3 hours at RTO offices to collect their learner’s licences, after passing the RTO test. Some people were even asked to collect the licence the next day.

The official said it caused unnecessary trouble for applicants as many of them take the day off for the driving test. It was a waste of their time and money as well.

However, people at Tardeo RTO still don’t have this service. A driving school owner said that currently the waiting time for getting learning licence in hand at Tardeo RTO is at least couple of hours.
