No more bumpy rides? A month before Mumbai monsoon, MMRDA to repair potholes on WEH, EEH

With the monsoon just a month away, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) will spend Rs12.07 crore to repair and maintain the Western and Eastern Express Highways. The MMRDA, which recently got possession of the two roads from the public works department, will fill potholes on the main carriageway and the service road, along two of the city’s arterial roads. However, the authority will not carry out maintenance work on the roads’ flyovers as they are managed by a different government body.

“We will repair the potholes and carry out other maintenance work before the monsoon to ensure that Mumbai’s motorists have a smooth commute,” said Pravin Darade, additional metropolitan commissioner, MMRDA.

Officials said that after the monsoon ends, the MMRDA will resurface the 26.5-km-long WEH and the 23.5-km-long EEH. They added that contracts for maintenance work would be awarded soon and the work is expected to be completed within 15 days.

“We have invited bids for maintenance and repair work on the WEH and EEH. The same contractor will also carry out desilting work,” said an official.
