After a six-month hunt, the DB Marg police arrested a 34-year-old contract killer from Ahmedabad for allegedly stabbing a shopkeeper from Grant Road to death.
The accused, who was arrested on Wednesday, has been identified as Wasim Khan. The police said Khan is a hitman and had been contracted by the victim’s previous employer.
The police said Babulal Saini, 44, worked in Abid Ali’s shop, which sells loudspeakers, near Grant Road station for 10 years. However, in March 2017, after saving up, he quit and started his own loudspeaker shop right next to his employer’s shop.
Ali lived in Jaipur and visited his shop in Mumbai rarely, and within four months, all of his customers had started going to Saini’s shop instead, said police inspector Pandhrinath Patil from DB Marg police station.
When business slowed down, upset and jealous, Ali and his brother Shahid decided to get rid of his competitor permanently. Ali then gave a contract to two hitmen, Afsal Shaikh and Khan, to kill Saini, the police said.
On July 16, the two men entered Saini’s shop and stabbed him seven times in the chest and abdomen, killing him instantly. “As it was a Sunday afternoon, there were no people around, and nobody saw them,” Patil said.
Police officials said they checked the area’s CCTV footage after the murder was discovered, and saw two men entering the shop. They then started checking all mobile numbers active in the area at the time of the murder — traced through the nearest mobile tower — and discovered that two of the numbers were saved in Saini’s contact list. These were Alli’s and Shahid’s numbers, so the police picked them up.
During interrogation, the brothers confessed and also revealed the names of the two hitmen. “We arrested Shaikh and were looking for Khan,” said Patil. “We had sent teams to Jaipur, Sangam Nagar and Ahmedabad to trace Khan.”
On Monday, they got a tip-off that Khan had been spotted in his village in Ahmedabad, so a team from Mumbai was sent there urgently, who with the help of the Gujarat crime branch arrested Khan for murder.
