Witnesses said the victim was thrown up in the air before he landed on the car’s windshield. Kiran Kamlakar Khaire, 52 had stepped out of his Virar (East) residence for an errand when a Ford car driven by Dr M Tondare, 45, hit him.

An eyewitness said Tondare was speeding.

From the impact of the speed, Khaire was thrown up several feet up in the air. He landed on the windshield, which gave way, and ended up on the car’s front seat. The police confirmed that he was not under the influence of alcohol.

Khaire suffered fractures and was severe head and chest injuries, PI Janardhan Parabkar from the Virar police station told HT.

Locals rushed Khaire to a nearby private hospital, but he died sixhours later, Parabkar said. Dr Tondare was arrested under relevant sections of the Indian penal Code, but had to be transferred to hospital after complaining of low blood pressure, Parabkar said.

“We arrested him soon after he was discharged and produced him before a Vasai court. He has been granted bail.”

Khaire’s family has demanded action against the doctor and a compensation for the loss.

A minor ruckus ensued at the hospital, officials said.
