“The public works department (PWD) had initially decided carry out maintenance work from January 23 to February 12, according to which we planned traffic diversion.

However, the PWD failed to prepare for these diversions,” said Satish Gaikwad, senior inspector, Vashi traffic unit. “Signboards need to be installed to guide motorists and dividers need to be adjusted for such major diversions. But the PWD did nothing. Therefore, the entire work has been postponed.”

During the maintenance, all vehicles going from Panvel-side to Mumbai will have to use the Mumbai-Panvel lane. On the other hand, light vehicles coming from Mumbai will be diverted on the old bridge.

“Even the old bridge is in a bad shape. Hence, heavy vehicles won’t be allowed on this bridge,” Pawar said.

Heavy vehicles from Mumbai will have to take the Nashik Highway to reach Airoli toll naka via Vikroli. From Airoli toll naka, they will have to reach the Thane-Belapur Road via Diva gaon circle and then carry on with their journey.
