MUMBAI: Three days after the death of a traffic head constable, who was allegedly repeatedly hit on the head by a traffic offender and his elder brother while on duty, the wives of several policemen met Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray on Saturday to complain about the pathetic working conditions for their husbands. Thackeray had been critical about the attacks on policemen and had been vocal against the state government for their failure to control them. Their grievances included erratic working hours, constant harassment from seniors as well as housing problems.

Around 300 women met Thackeray at his Dadar residence Krishna Kunj. Thackeray assured them that he would soon meet both chief minister Devendra Fadnavis as well as the Mumbai police commissioner Dattatray Padsalgikar and apprise them of the situation. On the afternoon of August 23, Vilas Shinde was collecting details of motorists as part of a future e-challan system when he saw a minor riding a bike and stopped him. He asked the boy to call his parents as he was not legally allowed to ride a bike. The boy telephoned his elder brother and told him an exaggerated version of the incident. This enraged the 21-year-old Qureshi, who rushed to the spot and hit Shinde on the back of his head with a stick.
