The number of crimes reported against foreigners in India fell in 2015, compared to the cases filed last year.

Of the 53 cases, 36 are against tourists and 17 are against expats. Maharashtra is followed by Uttar Pradesh (33), Goa (30), Rajasthan (24), Karnataka (22), Himachal Pradesh (15) and Punjab (13).

Across the country, four foreigners were murdered in 2015, 12 cases of rape, 23 cases of assault on women with intent to outrage modesty, six cases of insult to modesty, four cases of kidnapping and 10 cases of robbery were filed. There were 223 cases of theft involving foreigners across the country.

According to NCRB, a total of 365 crimes were reported against foreigners in India in 2015, compared to 486 in 2014, which is a dip of 25%. The NCRB started to collect data on crimes against foreigners, including tourists, in 2014.

Police sources said Mumbai, Pune and Aurangabad are popular locations amongst foreigners in the state. “The cases against foreigners are taken seriously and immediate action is initiated,” said a police officer.

In 2014, the number in the state was 59, of which 34 were against non-tourist foreigners, who are employed in Maharashtra.
