MUMBAI: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) conducted a trial between Wadala and Lower Parel stations for its second phase of the monorail corridor which is likely to be operational by the end of the year.

The second phase of the 11-km-long corridor will run between Wadala and Jacob Circle. The test run, a third, covered 9 km on Saturday, traversing as many stations in 56 minutes with a speed of 15 kmph.

There were two test runs carried out on August 15 and 25 between Wadala and Mint colony.

The fourth trial is scheduled for October 30 and will cover the entire corridor from Wadala to Jacob Circle. At present, the project is 1,200 meters short of its target.

With the Ganesh festival soaking the city, the MMRDA even co-opted a new moniker for the monorail: Mono Lalbaugchi Rani. Currently the monorail runs between Chembur and Wadala, an 8.9 km stretch.

The functional 8.8-km stretch between Chembur and Wadala has been plagued by frequent disruptions, caused by snags.

MMRDA officials are upbeat that the Phase 2 will prove to be a turnaround of sorts for the monorail.
