While 11 of them died on the spot — trapped in the mangled remains of the Tata Sumo they were travelling in — another died after being taken to Sion hospital. Four more, including two children, are in hospital.
Superintendent of Police, Highway Patrol (Thane) B.G. Shekhar said the mishap occurred at 3.30 am on Friday near Nagothane, 103 km from Mumbai.
Sixteen people were on their way to Khed taluka in Ratnagiri district in a rickety Tata Sumo. The driver lost control of the vehicle and collided head-on with a truck — overloaded with iron ore — travelling in the opposite direction on a narrow stretch of the highway. No one in the truck was injured.
