This includes detecting underground cavities using Ground Penetrating Radar to pre-empt cave-ins. The system involves using a hi-tech device to identify leakages in underground utilities.

To begin with, it will be tried out in a few areas before deciding on its feasibility. On the priority list are Veer Nariman Road in Churchgate, main roads near Shivaji Park, Saat Rasta and Peddar Road.

“We are concentrating on the island city as its drainage system is old and has box-type drains. These roads are more at risk,” said Chief Engineer Roads, Traffic and Bridges Department S.V. Joshi.

The Standing Technical Advisory Committee had advised the BMC to conduct a survey. The BMC has asked few experts to conduct a survey.
