Salma Sheikh’s in-laws have, however, alleged that she was beaten up by a tantrik.

The police have detained the in-laws, the tantrik and his aide.

Her in-laws said they had taken her to a tantrik about 20 days before her death.

The tantrik had beaten her up with a broom saying an evil spirit had possessed her and hence she was not keeping well.

Sheikh had married 14 months ago and has a two-month-old baby.

Her mother and brother, Mir, rushed her to Cooper Hospital on March 18 after they found her lying unconscious at her in-laws residence.

The victim’s family had first taken her to a private hospital.

The staff there reportedly refused to treat her as she had several bruises on her body and advised them to take her to a government hospital.

The DN Nagar police have registered a case of voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means against the tantriks.

Senior Police Inspector M.D. Avhad of DN Nagar police station said: “We have learnt that the woman died because of some tuberculosis-like disease for which she was admitted to the hospital. We have detained the in-laws and the tantrik and his aide.”
