The five-hour mega block on the main line of the Central Railway (CR) coupled with the extension of the block on the harbour line by two hours gave commuters a harrowing time on Sunday.
The CR imposed a mega block on the fast line between Matunga and Mulund from 10.28am to 3.25pm. The harbour line block was from Kurla to CST from 10.43am to 3.48pm.
The replacement work of wooden slippers between Andheri to Mahim went on till 7pm, resulting in the halting of 4 to 5 Andheri or Bandra-bound trains at Mahim. The harbour corridor from Mahim to Andheri on the western line too was affected. Consequently, some Andheri-bound local trains too were cancelled. Though the Western Railway (WR) did not have a mega block, the harbour line block affected its services.
C David, public relations officer, WR, said: "The maintenance work went on till evening affecting the harbour line services. But trains on the main line were running as per the schedule."
"There is a mega block on the harbour line every Sunday. But, stretching it till evening, made matters worse. There was no train on the harbour line at Mahim station till 5pm. No announcements were being made thus leading to confusion. It took me four hours to reach home," said Rohit More, 32, a Vashi resident.
"Though the block was to end at 4pm, there was no train at Sewri station for almost half an hour. No announcements were being made," said Sameera Naik, 21, a student from Tilaknagar.
On the central line, though the block got over at 4pm, the trains continued to run behind schedule.
"It takes some time to get the trains back on schedule after the block period. Though the block was over by 4pm, the trains were running 15-20 minutes behind schedule," said AK Singh, public relation officer, CR.
