The last five days of above normal temperatures are probably the longest in March, in the last five years, said weather department officials on Wednesday.
“While long spells of heat do take place in April and May, the occurrence in March could be possibly uncommon,” said VK Rajeev, director, western region, India Meteorological Department (IMD).
On Wednesday, heat conditions continued over the city with maximum temperature of 39 degree Celsius recorded in suburbs, which was 8.8 degrees above normal.
In south Mumbai, the maximum temperature was 5.3 degree above normal at 36.5 degree Celsius.
According to weathermen, continuation of the anti-cyclone phenomenon over the north-east Arabian Sea adjoining Maharashtra and Gujarat coast is responsible for the rise in maximum temperatures.
IMD officials said the hot weather could last for a few more days. “This condition is expected to last for three more days. The temperatures are likely to reduce on March 10,” said S Sudevan, director, weather forecasting, IMD.
An anti-cyclone is an area with high atmospheric pressure where the winds flow clockwise in the northern hemisphere and anti-clockwise in the southern hemisphere.
As a result, the solar radiation getting into the earth’s surface does not allow warm the air to escape into the atmosphere resulting in temperature rise.
The difference between maximum and minimum temperatures has also been varying up to 20 degree Celsius. On Wednesday, the minimum temperature in Santacruz was 18.8 degree Celsius (one degree below normal) while it was 1.9 degrees below normal at 23.5 in Colaba.
However, there was a slight increase in humidity levels with 27% in the suburbs and 46% in south Mumbai.
The weather department has forecast a maximum temperature of 39 degree Celsius and a minimum temperature of 19 degree Celsius for Thursday.
