Water supply and sanitation minister Babanrao Lonikar seems to be in more trouble. After the controversy over discrepancies in his educational qualifications mentioned in his election affidavits over the years, the Congress has alleged the BJP leader has not mentioned his second wife in his poll documents.
Though both his wives –Manda and Vandana – are included in the voters’ list, the affidavit submitted by the minister in the last three elections has no information about Vandana.
“We are not raising questions about the legality of having a second wife, as the minister and his family may have an explanation for that. Our objection is to the non-discloser of the information. This is a serious offence and Lonikar must face action for it,” said Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant.
To prove its claim, the Congress has produced a newspaper clipping in which the minister is seen performing pooja at Tulja Bhavani temple in Solapur with his second wife Vandana.
Despite repeated attempts, Lonikar could not be reached for comments. His office said the allegations were just an attempt by the Opposition to target him.
Sawant said his party is waiting for the state government to initiate action against Lonikar. “The BJP has been targeting ministers from other parties on smaller issues. Now, we are waiting for it to sack him,” he said.
