The 20-feet deep manhole is located outside the New MHADA Colony in the lower-middle class suburb of Mankhurd in northeast Mumbai.

The child, Ayub, was playing outside the colony when he slipped and fell into the manhole around 8 pm on Sunday and the residents nearby raised hue and cry about it, a police official said.

Upon hearing of the missing child, his grandfather Parvez Shaikh suffered a massive heart attack and died, police said.

Despite frantic efforts by the fire brigade and municipal divers, the child remains untraced in the gutter, which is full of sewage.

Local legislator and Samajwadi Party state leader Abu Asim Azmi visited the spot and consoled the family as Ayub's mother and elder brother grieved for him.

Ayub's father, Salam, works abroad and the family has informed him of the accident.
