The reason is that Neetu’s elder sister has refused to lodge a complaint, stating it to be a family matter.

The police are now forced to make the scrap dealer, who saved the child, as the complainant.

“The scrap dealer was made the complainant as he is an eyewitness who saw Neetu throwing the baby from the bridge” said senior inspector Purshottam Gawande of Charkop police station.

The police said that Neetu tried to kill her niece as she did not want to marry the man chosen by her elder sister Deepkamal (34). The accused confessed to the police that by killing her niece she wanted to hinder the marriage plans.

Initial investigations revealed that on Thursday, Neetu had a heated argument with Deepkamal as the prospective groom was coming to see Neetu on Friday and their engagement was scheduled for the next day.

An angry Neetu took Deepkamal’s four-year-old daughter Shreya to a bridge (which has a height of 25 feet) near Charkop bus depot and threw the girl off the bridge, the police said.

Karim Khan, a scrap dealer who saw this, saved the girl along with two other men present at the spot. Khan also tried to chase the accused.

Despite falling from a height, Shreya escaped serious injuries as she was saved by the mangroves below the bridge.

Neetu was produced in the Bandra metropolitan magistrate’s court on Friday, which remanded her to police custod till October 6.
