“The reason behind providing this service is to establish a system to verify the applicant’s address proof. Presently there is no foolproof mechanism to check their correct address,” said a senior RTO official.
The transport department feels that this system will put an end to the problem of fake addresses and multiple driving licenses. “This proposal has been approved and people will get driving licenses delivered to their residential addresses,” said C S Sangitrao, Principal Secretary, Transport Department.
The department will also amend the state Motor Vehicle Act to make this service mandatory for all RTOs. There will be a separate window at RTO offices where people can pay and get their license delivered at their doorstep.
The service charges for the service will be between Rs 20 and Rs 30. The proposal is also aimed at curbing the role of middlemen and agents.
