The first day of the onset of the monsoon saw an accident in Fort, which killed one man and injured another. The tragedy took place when a weather shed between two buildings collapsed on Sunday.
The weather shed, located between Shaheen and Rehmat buildings, collapsed on two passers-by, civic officials said, adding that it may have collapsed because of strong gusts of wind and intermittent heavy rains.
The man who was killed has been identified as Khayyum, 45, and the injured as Prakash Babbar, 56.
Local residents said neither of them were residents of the buildings and were standing under the weather shed closer to Shaheen building for shelter from the rain. The building is more than 100 years old but is in good condition.
“Both of them were rushed to GT hospital. The slab had fallen on Khayyum’s head and he was bleeding a lot. He was declared dead on admission. Babbar has been admitted to the hospital with injuries on his chest and legs,” said Shoaib Sayed, 34, a taxi driver who witnessed the incident.
Fire brigade officials have started clearing the debris and checking whether other parts of the two buildings are stable.
“We were notified immediately. We have registered an accidental death report and we are investigating to find out why the shed collapsed suddenly,” said Siddheshwar Gove, police inspector, MRA Marg police station.
