Crime branch officials said they were close to establishing the identity of the victim whose skull was recovered. Hence, the police pleaded that they need Palande and Shinde’s custody for custodial interrogation.

The crime branch had recovered a human skull at the ghat on April 16, where Palande had dumped Delhi-based aspiring film producer Karankumar Kakkad’s remains. However, while the DNA test of a torso found at the spot confirmed it was Kakkad’s, the report revealed the skull was not his.

A third murder case was filed against Palande and Shinde at the Oshiwara police station on June 10. Police said Kakkad’s body was cut into pieces, wrapped in plastic, and thrown in the ghat. Officials said the skull, found in a different plastic bag, had been disposed of earlier date, as it was more decayed than Kakkad’s remains.
