The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) issued a circular on Wednesday asking assistant municipal commissioners to conduct regular checks and take stern action against contractors who violate rules.

Action against the contractors has been initiated after the Hindustan Times reported about parking lot contractors in city's busy areas over-charging motorists. After the reports were published, the civic body had sent its staff to do checks, which revealed the violations.

While contractors found charging more than the approved rates will have to pay a penalty of Rs500, if they are caught three times, the BMC will blacklist them and their contract will be scrapped, stated the circular.
