The Thane police on Monday arrested Dahisar residents Ambrish Trivedi (28), his sister Vaishali (31) and friend Rakesh Jhala (27) for allegedly murdering Sonal Borkatariya, an executive with an Andheri banquet hall in May 2009.

Ambrish reportedly told the police that Borkatariya was having an affair with his father Pradeep (48), who was her colleague, and this was causing a lot of tension at home. “Hence, Ambrish and Vaishali decided to get rid of Borkatariya to free their father from her influence,” said Inspector A. Shelke of the Kasarvadavli police station.

On May 27, 2009, Ambrish and Vaishali met Borkatariya near her house and offered to drop her to work in their car. Jhala followed them on his motorcycle.

En route, the accused offered her an aerated drink laced with sedatives. “After Borkatariya fell unconscious, Rakesh and Vaishali strangled her with a cloth and dumped her body in a gutter at Kasarvadavli,” said a police officer, requesting anonymity.

The police zeroed in on Ambrish after they looked through the victim’s cellphone records and found that he was the last person to have called her on the day she went missing.

The trio has been sent to the police custody till March 6.
