The incident took place at 9.05am when Mobin Barmare was driving his employer Rehana Shehdad, an Australian national who works as a legal advisor, in a Honda Accord to her Worli office. “The accident happened because Barmare ignored one-way rules,” said Mangesh Pote, senior police inspector. “He was driving in the wrong direction on Road No 35, which connects Linking Road to Waterfield Road.”

Barmare took a right turn on to Linking Road at high speed and hit an auto, which Manda-kini Mode, 45, was getting into. The car then crashed into three other vehicles, including a BMW, before knocking down a biker. Auto driver Chandrakant Tupe, 45, and Mahesh Ajwani, 45, a diamond trader who was riding the bike, were declared dead at Bhabha hospital.

Preliminary reports suggest Barmare was not drinking and driving. The driver was arrested for culpable homicide not amounting to murder and remanded in police custody for five days.
