Ever since his debut single, Baaki Baatein Peene Baad , made him an overnight sensation across the country, singer Arjun Kanungo has not looked back. Since the release of the single, Kanungo has already done over 40 live shows in and around the country and recently released his second independent single, Fursat.
The Mumbai born singer talks to us about his journey in the industry so far and more. Excerpts:
Baaki Baatein made you an instant hit in the industry. Did you expect the song to be this big a hit?
I don’t want to sound clichéd, but honestly I didn’t expect it to become this big a hit. It’s being played at almost every party, and it’s still topping the charts. So it has been a surreal experience so far. When I was recording Baaki Baatein Peene Baad, I wanted my debut song to set me apart and establish my identity in the industry. I didn’t want to hear things like Arjun sounds like this musician or that singer. That’s why I took a long time to release my debut single.
Your recent single is a romantic soft number. Was it a conscious effort on your part to release a single which was nothing like your debut song?
No, it wasn’t a conscious effort. But we had recorded it at the same time. I am a huge fan of romantic ballads and I wanted to do something in that space. It’s probably more of a coincidence that after Baaki, I worked on a soft number. Also, Baaki baatein was more of a party song. I wanted my next single to be about my voice.
Sounds like you want to create your own style of music in the industry. Have you reached to a conclusion after this song?
Not really (laughs) It’s still a long process. I am still in the process of finding what kind of music will establish me as an individual artist. I do feel that my strength is doing romantic or love ballads, but there’s a lot more that I want to do in music.
You also have had quite a fan following since your debut. Any crazy fan memories that you’d like to share?
I don’t like to call them my fans. They are my family and friends. Sometimes, I cant believe the extent they go to tell me how much they love me. There was this one incident, where a girl hurt arm and wrote Arjun on it. While it was a very sweet gesture, I really don’t promote such ideas. I am here because of them and I love them despite all this. When people do such things, I feel bad.
