Talented musicians, on-the-spot jamming, and soulful melodies, all under the same roof — no we are not talking about a music concert. After making its debut last year, Coke Studio India is back with a new series, that too in a big way.

The MTV show brings together artists from different genres, to create a series of medleys. The latest season will go on air on July 7, constitute 12 music producers, and will showcase around 200 artists — in comparison to last year’s one music producer (Lesle Lewis) and about 50 artists. “Season two promises to offer a musical concoction never heard before,” says Wasim Basir of Coca-Cola India. Big names in music including Nitin Sawhney, Karsh Kale, Clinton Cerejo, the filmy duo of Ehsaan and Loy, Shantanu Moitra, Amit Trivedi and Hitesh Sonik, along with Shilpa Rao, Papon and electronica collective Jalebee Cartel, will enthrall music lovers.

“I had it in mind that each song should have its distinct identity so the audience enjoys it,” says Trivedi, speaking about the upcoming season. Sonic adds, “I’ve tried to bring an element of Indian culture through the songs.”

The first season of the show saw its share of comparisons with its counterpart in Pakistan. While some criticised the desi version for not living up to expectations, others praised it for its music. But, whether we’ll get our own Arif Lohar (Jugni) and Meesha Shafi (Chori Chori) from this season, is something we’ll have to watch out for.
