The 80-year-old, who has a flourishing business in Hafizganj, 23km from Bareilly, married Aneesa, three years his junior, when he was 15. “Ours was the most lavish wedding Hafizganj had seen,” says Khan. The newlyweds decided to help Khan’s father, a milkman, and the business took off. Khan can’t thank Aneesa enough. “She was the one who stood by me when my father passed away.”

But, there was one irritant – Khan found his wife to be too close to her parents. “She favoured her parents even when they were wrong,” says Khan, who often argued over it with his wife.

Things got out of hand in 2013. Khan was incensed when he got to know that Aneesa met her parents without informing him. He said talaq, talaq, talaq in front of four witnesses and the marriage was over. Regretting his outburst, Khan sought out scholars who offered nikah halala as a solution. Under nikah halala, a woman can remarry the divorced partner only after she consummates a marriage with someone else and separates again.

Aneesa went through it and Hafizganj’s oldest couple was together six months later.

A BITTER END TO A 15-YEAR-OLD BOND

LUCKNOW: Azad Shah and Shabnam were a happy couple till the fateful day.

Nawabganj police officer Gaurav Singh Yadav said a local mobile shop owner accused Shah of stealing a handset. Shabnam found the act humiliating and rebuked her husband. Shah allegedly manhandled her and then divorced her, saying talaq thrice.

Shabnam filed a police complaint against her husband and later shifted to her mother’s place.

“It’s painful that our 15 year-old-relationship ended abruptly. But I have now decided that I will not stay with a thief,” said Shabnam.
