A day after 25-year-old gym owner and trainer Jitendra Yadav was shot allegedly by an under-training sub-inspector (SI) of Noida police near Sector 122, senior officers have assigned the investigation to the crime branch. Apart from this, a circle officer will conduct an inquiry on the role of the three other accused policemen who were present at the spot along with the accused SI Vijay Darshan.

According to police sources, Yadav’s family named all the four police personnel, including SI Vijay Darshan, as accused in the case. It is alleged that Darshan fired at Yadav from his service weapon. A case under IPC sections of causing hurt in order to commit robbery and attempt to murder has been lodged at the Phase-3 police station.

“Since all four personnel were attached to the same police station, I have assigned the investigation to the crime branch. They have taken over the probe. An officer of the rank of circle officer will investigate the role of the other three police personnel. If they are found guilty, suitable legal action will be taken against them,” said Love Kumar, senior superintendent of police.

All four policemen have been suspended following the incident and SI Darshan has been arrested and remanded in jail.

Yadav’s family has claimed that the SI shot Yadav with the view to stage an encounter in order to get an ‘out-of-turn promotion’.

SI Darshan was accompanied by under-training SI Pankaj and two constables on motorcycle duty.

The Noida police has denied that incident was an ‘encounter’. The department also refuted allegations that the shooting was done to secure an ‘out-of-turn promotion’. Sources said out-of-turn promotion policy was not applicable to under-training officers.

Further, the Noida police said an ‘encounter’ was not possible as there were four other men present in Yadav’s car and the incident took place just on the outskirts of the village where they resided.

Apart from Yadav, his older brother, uncle Kripal and two friends, Sunil Jat and Gautam, were present in the car at the time of the shooting.

“SI Pankaj and the two constables were called in by SI Darshan as he wanted them to have a look at the men in the car who were allegedly “playing loud music”. All four boarded a car owned by SI Pankaj and drove to the spot where the incident took place,” an officer from the Noida police said.

The police have maintained that the Yadav’s brother knew SI Darshan and had even dropped him to police lines on Republic Day. This claim has been denied by the brother.

“There was some altercation when policemen reached the spot. The victim probably resisted the action by policemen and the accused SI shot him. Our line of investigation has ruled out any encounter motive. It could have been the result of some altercation or some other issue that cropped up between the men and the firing ensued,” an officer said.
