After having lost to the hosts on Saturday in pool play, the Indian team led by Nasser Hussain pulled up their socks and upset the higher ranked Chinese in their opening match today, according to information available here.

Buoyed by this win, they trounced Singapore 31-0 after leading 19-0 at half time but then could not continue their winning streak and later went down to South Asian rivals Sri Lanka 10-38 in the third match.

After its recent training camp in South Africa, the team, and ranked ninth and last in the tournament, displayed good confidence and strategy while the hot and dry weather also favoured them.

Participation in the tournament is part of the team's preparations for next year's Commonwealth Games where the Sevens is a medal sport.
