World No 7 and top seed Saina Nehwal will begin her campaign in the Jaypee Syed Modi International Grand Prix Badminton Tournament with a first round match on Wednesday. She will take on the winner of the qualifying match between Juhi Dewangan and Shivalaya Gupta.

Second seed Maria Febe Kusumastuti of Indonesia has been pitted against Anjali Kalitha of India in her first round match, also on Wednesday.

In the men’s singles, top seed Chetan Anand, given a bye in the first round, will take on the winner between Rajiv Bajaj and Srujan Nandaluri on Wednesday in the second round.

Second seed Arvind Bhatt has also been given a bye in the first round and will await the winner of a first round match between Rohan Castelino and Manish Gupta.

There was bad news after the top seeded duo of Jwala Gutta and V Diju withdrew. “Yes, Jwala has cited a foot infection for it,” competition director Girish Natu told HT on Monday.

Organising secretary, Vijai Sinha, announced that winners in both the men’s and women’s sections would get equal prize money.
