“The Congress will not enter into any pre-poll alliance and will contest all future polls, including the next general election, on its own,” AICC in-charge of Bihar affairs Gulchain Singh Charak said while launching the party’s membership drive in the state.

The national leadership has taken a policy decision to go it alone, Charak said ruling out any truck with the RJD and LJP as in the past. He, however, said the party had an open mind on post-poll alliance with any likeminded party.

He said the recent protests against chief minister Nitish Kumar, indicated that people have become disillusioned with the NDA government as well as the regional parties, which have ruled the state for the past two decades.

Charak denied media reports that Congress high command has directed its state unit not to carry out campaign against the chief minister saying “The state unit had launched ‘Pol Khol’ (expose) campaign against the state government with the consent of the central leadership.”

Replying to a question on the delay in appointing the state unit president, Charak said the party high command would soon finalize the names of new presidents for some half a dozen states, including Bihar.

On the special state category demand by the state, Charak said “If Bihar fulfils the criteria for the special status, the Centre will definitely consider it.”

The AICC in-charge initiated the membership drive (2011-15) by providing membership to all senior leaders of the party, including Kaiser, Sadanand Singh, Ramjatan Sinha, Anil Kumar Sharma, Ajay Singh, Madan Mohan Jha, Vijay Shankar Dubey, Sanjeev Prasad Toni, Kapildeo Prasad Yadav, Srikant Satyadarshi and several others, under his own signature.

“It has been decided to enroll 1 crore members in the next couple of years and before the 2015 organisational polls,” he said.
