Couple killed in sleep as car rams into hut in Bihar’s Kaimur district

Hira Lal , 70, and his wife Jira Devi, 65, were killed when the driver lost control over the car and the vehicle rammed into their hut near Barej village in Mohania police station area of Kaimur district.

A car rammed into a hutment, killing a mahadalit couple and injuring six other persons who were sleeping inside, in Kaimur district of southwest Bihar.

The incident took place late Tuesday night near Barej village in Mohania police station area, 190 kms southwest of state capital, Patna.

Police said Hira Lal, 70, and his wife Jira Devi, 65, were killed when the driver lost control over the car and the vehicle rammed into their hut along the national highway (NH)-2. The driver and other occupants of the vehicle escaped from the site after the accident, the police said. A plate, with ‘education department, Bihar’ inscribed on it, was fitted to the car having registration number of neighbouring Uttar Pradesh, the police added.

The injured had been admitted at trauma centre of Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, the police added.

Locals said the driver was apparently drunk as two bottles of liquor were in the car when they reached there. Kaimur superintendent of police (SP) Harpreet Kaur, however, denied recovery of any liquor bottle from the car.

Police inquiry revealed that the car was registered in the name of Rakesh Kumar Dubey with regional transport office, Mirzapur, in Uttar Pradesh, the SP said.

Police were also verifying with the education department if the car was being used by it, she added.
